Recommendations, with reasons

Traveller favourites need at least 4.5/5 from 50 reviews on a connected rating source. Rising finds need at least 4.7/5 from 10–49 reviews. Our internal ordering tempers small samples with a 4.0 baseline weighted like 30 reviews, and caps count influence at 500. These are COMPAZ selection rules, not a provider’s ranking or a guarantee of quality.

A source with at least 20 reviews and a rating below 4.2 prevents a recommendation, even if another source rates the place highly. Source ratings and counts are shown separately. We do not add counts together or assume reviewers are independent across platforms.

Budget-friendly identifies a qualifying place in the lowest paid price tier. Price alone does not qualify a place and cannot prove value for money. Insider picks require a named editorial reviewer, a source link, a reason and a check within the last 180 days. Missing ratings alone never make a place a hidden gem. We do not infer recent hype, review authenticity or personal visits from aggregate ratings.

Places and review sources

When connected, Google Maps Places and Tripadvisor Content API supply review averages and counts. Coverage depends on connected services, supported categories and source availability. Review content is fetched on demand, kept out of our persistent and CDN caches, and linked back to its provider. No ratings are invented when a source is unavailable.

Location search and nearby listings use Photon and © OpenStreetMap contributors under the ODbL. Directory results appear automatically below any verified recommendations. They are sorted by distance, not quality. Searches expand from 5 to 20 km when fewer than five places are found.

Hand selected

Hand selected by Paul: only places explicitly confirmed by Paul, with a personal visit date and recommendation. Picks within 40 km of your destination appear here. An empty collection means no personal picks have been published for this area yet.

What’s next

Public event listings from AllEvents are checked against the selected location and shown in date order for the next twelve months. The MYKOTAO and MYSIDIBOU calendars add regional sources where available. Every event links to its original listing.

Event recommendations currently identify well-rated venues, not reviews of the event itself. Venue matching requires an exact normalized name and coordinates within 150 metres, with no ambiguous match. Up to four distinct venues are checked per request. All published dates appear directly in chronological order and can be filtered by event type.

Coverage varies. Smaller events, private Instagram posts, unpublished retreats and last-minute changes may be missing. Please check the source before booking or travelling. This first release does not promise every event or the best-rated venues worldwide.

Your privacy

The place you choose is saved in this browser so it is there when you return. You can change it at any time, or remove it by clearing this site’s browser data. We do not request your GPS location. Place searches and approximate destination coordinates are sent to the sources above to retrieve results. See Private.coffee’s privacy information and the respective providers’ policies. Hosting may process standard request logs. No account or payment is required.

Terms and provider privacy

COMPAZ is a discovery service. Confirm prices, opening hours, event dates and availability with the original provider before making plans. When using Google Maps content, the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service apply, and Google processes information according to its Privacy Policy. When review connections are enabled, destination coordinates and venue names may be sent to Google Maps or Tripadvisor to retrieve matching listings. We do not request or publish individual review text or reviewer profiles.
